Go Higher West Yorkshire is a partnership of 13 local higher education providers with the mission to reduce inequalities in higher education access, success and progression.

We recognise the value and potential care leavers have to progress into higher education. We also understand the challenges that young people face when they leave the care system and begin to live independently. We are therefore committed to giving care experienced young people the best opportunity to progress economically and educationally.

This project will introduce you to some academic research skills, facilitating you to explore a topic which is of importance or interest to you. Over a four week period you will be guided through four key stages of research:

1. Design
2. Fieldwork
3. Analysis
4. Presentation

Many higher education courses ask students to complete their own research project, from Business to History to Childhood Studies. Our Summer Project gives you a small taste for what studying in higher education might be like. Whether you later choose to enter higher education or not, we hope you enjoy this project and we look forward to seeing everything you find out as part of your research!

What can I expect from the project?

Now you are enrolled, you can begin your project!  Each week (for four weeks, starting now) new materials and guidance will become available to help you complete the next stage of your research.

It is up to you how long you spend on each stage, but we recommend 2-4 hours per week.  Your research is not being assessed, so don’t worry about how ‘good’ it is – just to try out some new skills and enjoy it.

Guidance for the first stage of your project is available now.  To get started, complete the first survey and then watch the Introductory vlog.  You can then work your way through the other guidance materials before getting started on your own ideas.  Guidance for stage two will become available one week after you enrolled, and so on.  You can use tools in the portal to take notes, but it will be helpful for you to bring your research together using your own word processing software etc.

Remember, to carry out your research you will mostly be using online sources to find information.  You won’t be interviewing anybody, nor will you be writing specifically about your own experiences or people you know.  However, you can talk to people around you for their advice and opinions if it helps you to organise your thoughts.
