The role of teachers, advisors, parents, carers and guardians is crucial in supporting students and potential students to access Higher Education. Whether supporting someone by raising attainment, helping them to make informed choices, or by providing practical information and guidance, Go Higher West Yorkshire can help.
We’ve compiled a list of resources, including lesson plans, videos, links to useful websites, quizzes and other activities, to help support learners’ attainment and aspirations, inform their choices about courses and careers, and to guide them through the application process and other practical issues on their journey to Higher Education.
If you would like to arrange a visit to your school, or require information about an event, contact the Go Higher West Yorkshire team.
The journey started in schools, colleges and universities, doesn’t end at graduation.
Exposure to the world of work is key to developing employability skills and securing a job.
That’s why we work collaboratively with employers and industry experts, supporting our partners to equip their students for the changing economy.
Leeds City College is celebrating a sporting first after gaining sector skills recognition for its sports coaching provision.
The College is the only Further Education establishment to receive SkillsActive and sports coach UK Endorsement for its HE sport coaching courses. All previous awardees have been Higher Education institutes / universities.
The stamp of approval from SkillsActive, the sector skills council for active leisure and learning, and sports coach UK, the strategic agency for sports coaching in the UK, marks the success of its Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Development and BA (Hons) Degree in Sports Coaching.
The kite mark identifies the programmes as high quality courses, with currency and relevance for today’s industry, as well as highlighting degrees which are recognised as meeting national standards and supported by the sports and active leisure industry.
The endorsement, which was a rigorous process with two application rounds, recognises the strength of the College’s courses in terms of the knowledge, theory and practical elements of the delivery as well as progression routes in place.
A high proportion of students who start on the FdA course go on to complete the BA (Hons) –which has a 100% achievement rate.
The College was credited for its strong employer links which effectively prepare students for employment, ensuring they receive a well-rounded education in sports coaching, gaining the right knowledge, experience and skills to succeed in the sector.
Tutors deliver the programmes in consultation with employers, liaising with them on curriculum design and content to ensure the employability of students. This is supported by a range of practical experience for students to be actively involved in, working out in the field with employers and organisations including The FA, Jane Tomlinson’s Run for All and Active Learning.
The college teaching team was credited for their part in the success of the courses, with the visiting Coach Education Evaluator commenting on “a very ambitious programme team, who are working very hard to achieve excellence with their students” and core coaching team who “are very student focused and passionate about what they do.”
“After a comprehensive submission process, we are delighted to receive this endorsement which recognises the strength of our provision in this area,” Richard Aust, Leeds City College Higher Education Curriculum Area Manager for Sport said.
“It is an important achievement for the College but also for the students who study with us as it provides sector validation for the qualifications they will leave with.”
Post study, many students go on to working in coaching roles in the public and private sectors or continue onto PGCE courses.
Steve McQuaid, Head of Coach Education and Development at sports coach UK said: “We would like to congratulate Leeds City College on the endorsement of the FdA Sports Coaching and Development, and the BA (Hons) Sports Coaching.”
“The programmes support students in accessing high quality coach education, and provide supported opportunities to practice coaching in real community settings. We look forward to working with Leeds City College in the future to explore how we can further support the students on the programmes.”
The endorsement for the degree courses, which run at Leeds City College Horsforth Campus, lasts for five years.
