Go Higher West Yorkshire is delighted to present two opportunities for learning and development as part of a āÆrace, inequality and education mini-series.āÆ
Both sessions feature⯠Professor Vini Lander, āÆDirector of the Centre for āÆRace, Education and Decoloniality in the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University.⯠Ā
As a mini-series, the sessions are designed to help address āÆrace āÆinequality across education settings in West Yorkshire by developing staff understanding and presenting opportunities for action.Ā

‘Letās Talk About⯠Race: Uni Connect Staff CPD Event for Schools and Colleges’Ā (Tuesday, 2 March 10am-12pm)Ā
An introduction āÆto the broad themes of āÆrace āÆinequality and education, supported by Professor Lander.āÆ
The sessionĀ will define and examine terminology, delineate different forms of racism, and provide definitions to help develop audience understanding.āÆThis will be followed by a short presentation on a school-led Black African and Black Caribbean student engagement project called ‘Kaleidoscope’ with insight from some of the students who are taking part.Ā
It is open to staff in schools, colleges and HE providers in West Yorkshire, but with particular relevance for schools and colleges.Ā
Addressing āÆrace āÆinequality in higher education: a GHWY good practice eventĀ (Tuesday, 9 March 9.30am- 1pm)
Professor Lander will discuss āÆrace āÆinequality in the higher education context, particularly in relation to the awarding gap and differential outcomes for many students from some BAME groups.āÆ
We will also be joined by Dr Joanne Tyssen (Head of Widening Participation at Leeds City Collegeās University Centre Leeds), who will share the findings from her research about HE opportunities for BAME young people in West Yorkshire, and HE students, who will share their stories, experiences and insights about⯠race āÆinequality in higher education.Ā
The session is open to staff in HE providers and FEĀ colleges, but with particular relevance for HE providers.Ā
