Impact of disability on HE access and success

  • Having a disability can result in a student having less self-confidence in their ability to achieve and succeed in HE.
  • This can be due to:
  • Struggling with acceptance in a predominantly ableist society
  • Negative social experiences and exclusion
  • Lack of support
  • Being given low expectations by health and education professionals
  • Despite this, students with a disability have many skills they can bring to HE. These include:
  • Resilience
  • Problem solving
  • Contributing to a more diverse student body and bringing a wider variety of views to course discussions.
