Care to Go Higher - A Programme for Care Professionals

About the programme

Go Higher West Yorkshire have worked with their partners across the region to provide an innovative training programme to key influencers of care experienced young people. Together we recognise the value and potential care leavers have to progress into higher education and beyond. However, far too few care leavers ever realise this potential.

The Care to Go Higher programme seeks to equip you, as a care professional, to support a care experienced young person to make informed choices about their education. The programme will immerse care professionals in a higher education environment in order to inform first-hand perceptions and perspectives about the higher education experience and its value.

Building on from a successful pilot, Go Higher West Yorkshire is delighted to now be able to offer this programme across West Yorkshire in 2021.

Our ultimate goal is to give care experienced young people the best opportunity to progress economically and educationally. Please join us!

There will be six taught sessions, delivered virtually with presentations, activities and discussion using Microsoft Teams.

Alongside the live sessions participants will have the opportunity to access extra resources, e-learning modules and be given a reflective workbook to complete between sessions to support their learning.

Session 1: Introduction to the programme and Go Higher West Yorkshire

Session 2: Raising Aspirations & Supporting Decisions

Session 3: Benefits of Higher Education

Session 4: Routes into Further Education and Higher Education

Session 5: Support Available for Care Leavers

Session 6: Conclusions, Reflections and Next Steps

Each session will also include the opportunity to interact with a higher education professional or student through live discussions, Q&As and videos. These interactions will help further participants understanding of all aspects of the higher education experience and the support provided along the journey. The virtual experiences will showcase a range of higher educational opportunities and environments, being led by a variety of members of the Go Higher West Yorkshire partnership.

We would love to see you sign up if you are working as a:

  • Residential children's home worker
