Go Higher on tour – Bus on Briggate

It was closed to public vehicles way back in 1993. Then entirely closed to public transport in 1996.

So, you would need a good memory to remember seeing a bus parked on Briggate, Leeds. (I just about remember …)

That is unless you were in the city on Friday the 17th of August 2018. That was when the Go Higher West Yorkshire bus came to town; parking up on Briggate, for the day, to share its wares with the good people of Leeds. And what a day it was!

The Go Higher West Yorkshire team of Graham, Lucy, Gareth and Tom were joined by Amanda from Prospects, Lottie from Bauer Media – and Jacob and Billy, student ambassadors, from Leeds College of Building.

Our day on Briggate came just after the excellent A-level exam results across the region. And a record number of students achieving a university place nationally! Some 424,000. Yes, you read correctly: Four-Hundred and Twenty-Four Thousand!!!

But at Go Higher West Yorkshire the mission continues, and the team spent the day talking about all things related to Higher Education with parents, carers, guardians, students, uncles, aunties, grandmas and grandads. Some of these conversations included:

  • Universities
  • Course options
  • Student Finance
  • Clearing
  • Student Accommodation
  • Higher and Degree level apprenticeships
  • Careers

Alongside providing expert advice across the various aspects of Higher Education, the team – or Billy and Jacob – also handed many coloured balloons to the young – and some not so young – pedestrians.

Balloons aside, we think this work is a vital part of the process when it comes to informing and inspiring young people to consider and understand the choices and options available to them.

So, watch out for the bus coming to an area near you soon.

And please do hop aboard, you never know, it could be the start – or the next stage – of your journey into Higher Education!
